A German has been sentenced to ten months prison for posting hate speech on Facebook. The 47 year old, who has not been named, has called refugees “scumbags”, “rats”, and “vermin invaders”. He also published a comment on the NPD (far right nationalist party) Facebook page calling for the reactivation of concentration camps to get to grips with the problem.

According to the court in Oldenburg he committed several crimes between October 2015 and January 2016 that were classified as rabble-rousing. He was also sentenced for posting an image of the swastika, which is forbidden by law in Germany.

According to a court spokesman the sentence was so heavy because the man in question was a repeat offender and was still under parole at the time of the incidents. Therefore the court judged that the probability of him repeating these offences was pretty high.

The man has appealed against the sentence.
